Book club reading schedule
A reading schedule is four dates and four page numbers. Type the book's page count and how many weeks you have, and this makes one.
| By | Page | That week |
|---|
How to use it
Copy the table into the group chat, or print it. At each date, everyone says what page they are on. Nobody has to explain if they are behind.
The stopping points are also where you talk. At each one, the people who have reached it talk about what has happened so far; the people who have not skip that thread until they get there.
How long should a book take
Thirty pages a day is a pace most people keep. That is a 300-page book in about three weeks. Twenty a day, for people with no spare time, is the same book in five weeks. Fewer than fifteen a day and people forget what they read.
Put the last date on a weekend and meet then.
Chapters instead of pages
If everyone has a different edition, or someone is listening to the audiobook, page numbers do not line up. Use chapters. Divide the chapter count by the number of weeks and round.
EpyLog does this for you. Give it the book and it finds the chapter list, sets the finish date from the page count, checks in with everyone at each quarter, and shows each reader the club's notes up to their own chapter and nothing past it. The schedule stops being something the organizer has to keep.
Questions people ask
How many pages a week for a book club? About 200. That is thirty pages a day with a day off.
How long should a book club take to read one book? Three to five weeks for a book of normal length, depending on how much time people have.
What if people read different editions? Use chapters instead of pages. EpyLog finds the chapter list for the book so everyone is on the same scale.
Want the app to run it?
Give EpyLog your email and the book, then send your friends the link. Each of you says what chapter you are on and sees the club's notes up to there, and nothing past it. It sends the reminders and sets the meeting.
